Grape shoots must be picked up. Through topping, it can save a lot of nutrients needed for shoot growth, promote leaf thickening, full flower buds, and full shoots, which are crucial for improving the fruit set rate, yield, and quality of grapes. Grape shoots topping are particularly important for timing.

1. Topping time. For the new shoots, they are generally picked up at 3-5 days before flowering, and later at the early flowering stage. For varieties with serious drop and fruit drop, such as Kyoho, purple rose and other varieties, they can be picked 8-10 days before flowering. After the first picking, the leaves do not reach the required number of shoots. After the shoots grow, leave the leaves and perform the second picking on the shoots. For vegetative shoots and culture sticks, leave 12-15 leaves to pick up at once.

2. Topping method. When a fruit grower picks his heart at the grape's new shoot, he only skims to the top. This method is not desirable and will not achieve the desired effect of picking the heart. Because the leaves of the grape grow to 1/3 of the normal size, the carbohydrates produced by themselves through photosynthesis cannot satisfy their own consumption, and they still need to be supplemented with nutrients produced by other leaves. Only when the leaves grow to more than 1/3 of the normal leaves, the nutrients produced can supply other nutrients other than the leaves in order to maintain the nutrients needed for their continued growth. Therefore, when topping, it should be grasped that the topmost leaves left after picking should be greater than (at least equal to) 1/3 of the normal leaves. The second picking is performed on the auxiliary shoots that occur on the new shoots. At this time, leave enough leaves on the auxiliary tips to pick them up. In general, a total of 12-15 leaves are left for each result.

Until mid-July, rainfall is sufficient in most areas, the air humidity is relatively high, and the temperature is high. At this time, sub shoots continue to emerge. For these new shoots, except for leaving 2-3 at the top and leaving 3-5 leaves to pick the heart, all the remaining parts are removed. In areas where branches are lacking due to frostbite or disease, mechanical damage, or empty surfaces, new shoots produced from old branches or roots should be properly retained. Picking up these new shoots is particularly important. If they are allowed to grow, they tend to grow too vigorously, and the buds will move upwards. When they are pruned in the following year, they are cut off, but there is no yield. For these new shoots, when they grow to about 10 leaves, they should take 7-8 leaves to pick their hearts and force them to produce 3-5 shoots. When they grow to 10-12 leaves, they will pick their hearts to cultivate the next year. Result mother branch.
