Overview
A newly redesigned animal research facility at the University of Cork (UCC) in Ireland needed a solution to achieve 6-log biological sterilization in order to remove any potential bioburden from the room before it was re-used. The customer selected the Bioquell RBDS service, and Bioquell used hydrogen peroxide vapor technology to sterilize the entire room, including its dedicated HVAC system, to achieve a 6-log biological sterilization effect.
The engineer placed all the equipment in the area, started the sterilization cycle, let all the equipment run for a whole night, and then retrieved the equipment the next morning. During the cycle, an industry standard 6-log biological indicator was placed in the room and a chemical indicator was placed at the HVAC pipe for process validation. The chemical indicator for real-time feedback of the sterilization effect and the biological indicator after the culture showed that the entire room reached a 6-log biological sterilization effect. This allows customers to quickly use the room to work. The University of Cork in Ireland also purchased a set of Bioquell equipment for routine disinfection in future rooms.
background
A newly remodeled multi-story animal research facility at the University of Cork, Ireland, wanted to achieve 6-log biological sterilization in the room before re-commissioning, reducing environmental load levels. The agency did not detect specific biological contamination, but due to the construction activities of the agency, preventive measures were required.
challenge
In order to prevent cross-contamination, the entire mechanism must be sterilized as a discrete independent area, and the air-conditioning pipeline must be cleaned to prevent any potential microbial contamination in the pipeline. For audit and regulatory inspections, a comprehensive record of the entire process is also a must.
solution
After investigating the potential bio-purification specialist brands in the market, the University of Cork in Ireland chose the Bioquell RBDS service to determine the use of the scientifically certified Bioquell hydrogen peroxide vapor technology to provide the room and its associated HVAC system as much as possible. High level of aseptic service.
The strategy implemented by Bioquell engineers was to sterilize the ventilation system prior to sterilization in the room. This means that any potential contaminants in the pipeline will be “propelled†into the room before the room is sterilized, and the room will be sterilized after the pipe is sterilized, which prevents the sterilized room from being re-contaminated by the HVAC system.
deploy
This multi-story animal research facility consists of 50 rooms with a total volume of 2,500 m3. Engineers placed 18 Bioquell hydrogen peroxide vapor generators reasonably between floors to effectively sterilize the area. In addition, the engineer placed an additional 3 generators in the duct air-conditioned room to purify the air blown into the room. As shown in Figure 1, a special hose and custom closure are used to connect the generator to the plumbing to distribute the steam directly throughout the piping system.
The Bioquell biological indicator (B. stearothermophilus) was selected for the validation process. They are distributed at 94 in the area. At the same time, the chemical indicator is also selected for placement at the visible corners of the pipe work, giving real-time feedback on the effectiveness of the HVAC sterilization process.
During the day, Bioquell engineers install and test all the equipment to be used for work. After all the doors are closed, turn on the sterilization cycle and run all night. After the sterilization was completed the next morning, Bioquell engineers followed the prescribed procedure and wore a cleansing suit to enter the room to retrieve the equipment and indicators.
During the sterilization cycle, the staff will use a low level of hydrogen peroxide vapor detector to routinely monitor the perimeter of the area to prevent leakage of hydrogen peroxide throughout the cycle. At the end of the cycle, restart the HVAC system and turn on the Bioquell Catalytic Ventilation Unit to rapidly degrade the residual hydrogen peroxide vapor to make it oxygen and water.
result
All chemical indicators provide real-time feedback on the sterilization process to achieve a 6-log sterilization effect. After seven days of culture, the 94 biological indicators retrieved also showed 100% growth without any bacteria. This demonstrates that all sterilization zones achieve 6-log biological sterilization. All electronic equipment in the room during the sterilization process is exposed to hydrogen peroxide vapor, and the motorized equipment is in operation throughout the sterilization process. After the sterilization was completed, all the electronic equipment was confirmed to be in good working order. Hydrogen peroxide is also well compatible with all internal building surfaces.
in conclusion
After verification by biological indicators and chemical indicators, the entire animal research facility achieved 6-log biological sterilization. The fast sterilization process ensures that the mechanism can be put into use quickly. After this successful sterilization service, the University of Cork in Ireland purchased a Bioquell device for routine disinfection in a single room.
