According to a Hong Kong "South China Morning Post" website reported on February 10, the University of Hong Kong study examined the impact of lack of sleep on local doctors. It found that among doctors who needed night shifts, they had higher levels of DNA damage and lower levels of genetic activity associated with DNA repair.
The study was one of the first studies to examine the effects of sleep deprivation on humans, especially younger adults. Dr. Huang Tianzhen, an associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Hong Kong and one of the authors of the study, said: "This is a very preliminary study, but it suggests that lack of sleep is bad for you and bad for your genes."
DNA damage means that the basic structure of the genetic instructions involved in cell growth and cell function in the organism has changed, and this change has not been fixed when the molecule is replicated.
Dr. Huang said that DNA damage and lower repair capacity may have a greater impact on health. The findings of the study may also apply to people with similar work patterns to these doctors. These doctors work night shifts in an irregular manner.
The findings were recently published in the bimonthly issue of Anesthesiology.
The researchers observed 49 healthy full-time doctors from two local public hospitals. 24 of them must be on duty at night. Every month, most of these doctors need to work 5 or 6 nights. When working at night, doctors must work from the evening to the next morning.
The other 25 doctors do not have to work night shifts.
After three days of adequate sleep, the researchers took blood samples from all participants. The researchers also collected blood samples from doctors who had to work night shifts. These blood samples were collected the following morning, after sleep deprivation.
The researchers found that general practitioners who worked night shifts had DNA breaks 30% higher than those in regular classes. DNA breaks are a type of DNA damage.
This DNA damage was further increased by more than 25% due to one night of sleep deprivation. The researchers found that among the under-sleeping doctors, the level of genetic activity associated with DNA repair was also low.
But in this study, the mechanism by which sleep deprivation causes this damage is unclear.
