Danish scientists changed the gene of Arabidopsis thaliana to make it a "pointer" for mine detection. If there is a mine in the nearby soil, the transgenic plant will change from green to red. The German "Le Monde" recently reported that the study was done by scientists from institutions such as the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. This Arabidopsis thaliana contains a gene that normally does not function until autumn and leaves the plant leaves bright red. Scientists have genetically engineered the plant to make this discoloration gene “on†when it encounters nitrogen dioxide. Most traditional explosives release at least a small amount of nitrogen dioxide, and transgenic Arabidopsis can sense the presence of this gas through the roots. According to reports, experiments conducted by the Danish military confirmed that this transgenic Arabidopsis can effectively detect landmines.
