New method for detecting the therapeutic effect of blood diseases

This kind of blood disease is a difficult one.
Myelodysplastic syndrome is characterized by cytopenia and hematopoietic failure, and may progress to myeloid leukemia in severe cases. This disease is more common in the elderly. Bone marrow transplantation is a more effective treatment for this disease, but this method is prone to complications and is often not suitable for elderly patients.
The use of the drug azacitidine is another treatment. Azacitidine can effectively promote the hematopoietic function of the patient's body and reduce the risk of developing the disease into leukemia. However, about half of the patients in the clinic have no therapeutic effect after the injection of azacitidine, and it takes 4 to 6 months for the confirmed drug to be ineffective, delaying the precious treatment time.
In response to this situation, researchers at the University of New South Wales and the University of Technology in Sydney developed azacitidine mass spectrometry. The new method can quantitatively detect the amount of azacitidine in the patient's cells and determine whether the drug is effective.
Aswin Unik Rishinan, who participated in the study, explained that his team had previously found that patients who were not responding to azacitidine had fewer amounts of azacitidine in their cells after administration. So they developed this method based on this. The new method can accurately measure the amount of azacitidine in the cells, and after the patient takes a short time to determine whether the drug is effective, it does not need to wait for several months.
