Apple has just recruited Yoky Matsuoka to take charge of the health project. She is not only the co-founder of Google X Labs, but also the technical director of Google's smart thermostat developer Nest.
Yoky Matsuoka
According to an article published by Matsuoka in Medium last May, she moved from Nest to Twitter last year and was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Although she did not disclose what she was suffering from, she was fortunate that the treatment had worked.
Apple said that Masoka will report to the company's COO, Jeff Williams, who is responsible for Apple's growing health program. These projects include application development framework HealthKit, using mobile devices to expand ResearchKit medical research, help people improve medical standards CareKit.
Matsuoka's career is enviable. She moved from Japan to the United States when she was a teenager, hoping to become a professional tennis player and admitted to the University of California at Berkeley. But the injury ruined her tennis career, but she began to develop a tennis robot with her own interests, and was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her Ph.D. there and was involved in the development of the revolutionary BarrettHand robotic arm.
She then worked at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Washington for more than a decade of academic research and served as a professor of robotics. Matt Rogers, who co-founded Nest with Tony Fadell, is her student at Carnegie Mellon University.
In 2007, Matsuoka received the “Genius Award†from the MacArthur Foundation for her outstanding achievements in the field of neuro-robots, which can help people with disabilities or strokes regain control of their limbs.
After leaving the University of Washington, Matsuoka helped Google launch Google X Labs in 2009 and joined Nest in 2010. She developed a learning algorithm for the user interface and automation products for the company at Nest. Google bought Nest in 2014, and Masoka changed to Twitter a year later, and then changed his mind because of illness.
