The most daring treatment of medicine: using the electric field to stimulate the deep part of the brain instead of surgery

This is one of the most daring treatments in medicine – implanting a slender electrode through a hole in the skull to transmit current to the depths of the brain.

This "deep brain stimulation" (DBS) has produced miraculous effects in patients with epilepsy or Parkinson's disease that would otherwise be incurable, but drilling holes in people's heads is an extreme practice. In the future, people may be able to achieve the same effect by using a stimulator placed outside the head. This development is expected to enable DBS to be used to treat a wider range of diseases.

Implantation of the electrodes requires brain surgery and carries the risk of infection, so DBS is only considered when treating critically ill patients. However, Nir Grossman and his team from Imperial College London, UK, have discovered a safer way to use DBS – externally stimulating the brain without surgery.
