Tian Ji Huang is a small, annual herb, 10 to 30 cm tall; stems often have four edges and no hair. Leaves opposite, sessile, base slightly cauline; leaf blade ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 7-10 mm long, 1.5--6 mm wide, apically obtuse, base nearly cordate, entire, glabrous on both surfaces, There are sparse black spots on the back of the leaves, with 5 base veins. Several florescences throughout the year; cymules borne on branchlets apically, sparsely flowered; flowers yellow, ca. 6 mm in diam., pedicels slender, ca. 5–10 mm long; locules 5, linear oblong or elliptic, ca. 3–5 Mm; petals 5, obovate-oblong-ovate, ca. as long as calyx; stamens numerous, filaments basally connate; ovary ovate to elliptic, ca. 2 mm, styles 3, stigma capitate. Capsule oblong, ca. 4 mm, dehiscing at maturity.
